The Four Pillars
-
Strength
Strong tissues break less and age slower. Beyond developing lean muscle mass, resistance training strengthens our bones, tendons, and joints. It also grants us better control, stability, and mobility of these lean tissues. As such, it should be the base of most programming.
-
Conditioning
While cardio for fat loss is popular, the true benefit is the development of our energy systems. Better conditioning means more energy, better performance, better recovery, and overall better health. In this way, conditioning is used to enhance all other activies.
-
Mobility
You can only be strong in the range of motion (ROM) you can access. While proper strength training can grant general mobility, targeted areas on the individual might need work. Beyond reducing pain and injury, mobility training improves the quality of our other training.
-
Nutrition
You are what you eat, literally. All we eat turns to energy, mass, or waste. We need the energy for our activity/training, and for most of that training we adapt by building mass. Giving our body what it needs for energy and adaptations is crucial to any program.
Having a goal without a program is like having a destination without a route.
Every fitness goal can be achieved through some combination of strength training, conditioning, mobility training, and nutrition. These are what I call the Four Pillars of Fitness. Your training program must provide stimuli that cause your desired adaptations, and your nutrition program must fuel both the adaptations and the training itself. Both programs then need to be specified to the individual performing them, suiting not only their goals but their experience, fitness level, and overall lifestyle.
Every aspect of a program is adjustable through programming variables. For training these can include training frequency, program split, exercise choice, sets, reps, rest, etc. For nutrition, they include food groups, macronutrients, calories, meal timing, supplementation, hydration, etc. Reaching your goals relies on choosing the right variables to measure, the right values to start with, and the right progressions to build into your program(s).
All my services rely on this understanding. You need a program, whether I coach you through it, personalize it for you, or you write it yourself after our consultation.
